The Wellington Leader December 12, 1985

Mrs. Coda Bevers, 87, died at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Collingsworth General Hospital after a critical illness of several
months. She had lived in Collingsworth County and north Childress County for almost all of her life. Mrs. Bevers, the former Coda
Lee Russell, was born August 15, 1898, in the south part of Wheeler
County, 6 miles southeast of the place where Shamrock would be established later. She was the daughter of Tom Russell and Flora
Drake Russell. A short time later the family moved into Collingsworth County, locating on Elm Creek north of Needwood. Mr. Russell was a rancher and farmer. About 1904, the Russell family
moved to the Loco community, where she spent part of her girlhood. Later the family lived near Childress, where she and her brothers and sisters rode their horses to school. She studied business courses in high school and her first job was as a legal secretary to Sen. C.C. Small, who was then a district judge. She was also legal secretary to Judge R.H. Cocke. She was married to John F. Bevers May 31, 1920, in Amarillo. He died in 1974. Mrs. Bevers worked in Wellington banks for approximately 25 years. She and Mr. Bevers owned
and operated the City Cafe in Wellington from 1924 until 1931. She also had operated the Retail Merchants Association and she and her oldest son, the late Douglas Bevers, operated a real estate business.
It was only about two and one half years ago that she retired from
preparing income tax returns. She was a charter member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons, District Judge Denzil Bevers of Lubbock and Dan Bevers of Amarillo; one sister, Kate Weiss of Fresno, CA; and four grandchildren: Douglas Bevers, Jr., of Devon, Pa., Dana Wardell of Houston, Len Bevers of Lubbock and Heide Jackson of Lubbock. There are 7 great grandchildren.
