1903 Nina Mura Hellman * History 1990

Nina was born July 26, 1903, in Milan, Michigan, in a bee hive (Quonset hut). She was the youngest of two children born to Ferris Lee & Lois Mable Squires. The family moved to Vancouver when she was only three, and they crossed the Columbia River in a train on a ferry boat. When a teenager they moved on a farm near Orchards, where she met her future husband, who was a railroad yard worker and boxer. She married Charles Michael Hellman on June 16, 1923, and moved to St. John, where he became the Pacific Coast Bantam Weight Champion in 1927.

Chuck & Nina were baptized into the St. Johns SDA Church by Elder Rippey, in November of 1927. On November 23, 1927, while Chuck was winning a fight, Lois Marie was born. Wanda Fae was born August 31, 1929. In 1932, Chuck & Nina moved to the country – Redlands near Oregon City. In 1936, they moved back to St. Johns for the girl's education. Shirley Charlene Lee was born on November 1, 1938. In 1940, they assumed the responsibility of raising her sister's three boys, Ray, John & Roy Wesson, due to their folk's (Ervin & Fae) fatal illness. She cared for ten in the family including her mother & father.

Nina was active in the church – working with the children, Dorcas, In-gathering, and loved planning socials, especially to the beach. She enjoyed golfing & fishing with Chuck. After taking care of her ill Mother & Father and helping t0o raise the three girls & three boys, she worked with Chuck at their Chevron service station in St. Johns for 16 years. Upon retirement, they moved to Pacific City in 1978. Chuck passed away after 63 years of marriage in 1986.

In February & March of this year Nina entered the hospital for tests. She was brought home a week before her death and her three daughters, (Lois in residence, Wanda from Southern Oregon, & Shirley form California), took care of her up until her death at 7:40 PM on March 21, 1990.

Nina had a wonderful sense of humor even until the end. She died peacefully and with the Blessed Hope of seeing Jesus and her loved ones. "Please don't disappoint me," she said.

Children: Ray, John (deceased), Lois, Roy, Wanda & Shirley. Grandchildren 15, Great Grandchildren 18.
