Amos Douglass and Martha Whitman were married in 1856
In the 1860 Auburn, Maine Census, Martha and their two sons were residing in the home of her father and mother, Barza and Martha Whitman.
I believe that Martha was pregnant with their daughter and she stayed in Auburn, Maine while Amos went on to Stoneham, Maine where their daughter was born in October of 1860. Amos was apparently looking for work and a place for his family to live. ~ see 1860 Maine Census in Facts under Martha Whitman.

I don't know if this is Amos W. Douglass but it might be as he was 23 in 1860 and should have been of age to be taken into the service.
