Jesse Altadore Sturdivant, a farmer from Humboldt, Tennessee, was the 13th of the 14 children born to Jesse and Elizabeth (Smith) Sturdivant

Six children were born to Jesse and his first wife Mary Thomas Bailey (3 boys and 3 girls). All except two of those children died when they were very small.

Jesse attended medical school and became a doctor, but gave that up. For a while he was a teacher, and at some point he was also a carpenter. He spent most of his life in Tennessee, and after his first wife and some of his children died he moved to Texas where he married his second wife Sinie Servania aka Vannie Davis March 15, 1916 in Detroit, Texas. Sinie (aka Vannie) Davis was the widow of William Wesley Davis and had 7 children by her previous marriage..
