Isaac was named after three of his Uncle's, Isaac F. McCarty, Levi Satterfield and Sterling McCarty. He was known as Levi to distinguish him from his Uncle Isaac F. McCarty on whose fram he was born on Christmas Day in Grainger County, TN. Levi was a son of Jonathen Loven McCarty and Sytha (Sissy) Kirk McCarty.

His family lived in Grainger County, TN until 1848 when they moved to Greene County, MO. His mother would die in November 1849 when Levi was just under 4 years old. His father soon headed to California during the gold rush and in 1852 he was declaired dead, he wasn't. Levi and his brother, Sanders were bonded out to George Gibbon to learn how to farm.

Levi married Sarah Catherine Vaughan on July 10, 1863 in Greene County, MO.

Just after his 18th birthday he joined the 6th Regiment Provisional E.M.M.. One month later he deserted. The story goes that he contacted a disease and went home to receive better medical care and died at home. It is unknown if he left with or without leave but since he never returned he was listed as a deserter.
