Acord, Flora Lee Maxfield

Flora Lee Maxfield Acord died May 29, 2004, after a valiant struggle with cancer. She was born July 1, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Richard Elton and Edyth Roberts Maxfield. She was educated in Provo schools and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1955. She was a natural teacher and taught home economics at Dixon Junior High School in Provo; and then, later, became head of the Foods Department at Southern Utah University.

She married Fletcher F. Acord on June 10, 1961, in the St. George L.D.S. Temple. After her marriage, she continued to teach in Colorado and Arizona, until the birth of their children. She and Fletcher were blessed with Edy, Jim, Ann, and Carol. Together, they lived in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and Utah. Each place they lived, Flora Lee served in various positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including several stake and ward Relief Society presidencies. In each place she lived, she made strong, life-long friendships that endure to the present.

After the death of her husband, she started her own catering business, Arlington House Catering. She was an avid student of the gospel; and, in her later years, taught institute in the Hillcrest Stake for four years. Her most important lifes work was as a mother to her children and to others not her own. She was known as an innately classy and refined woman, whose higher ways made others look higher, as well. She was generous to a fault and enjoyed quietly giving to others. She was diligent, hard working, and constantly looking for ways to serve. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. The void she leaves can never fully be filled.

She is survived by her daughters: Edith Kathleen Buss (Robert), Anna Lee Merrill (Jeff), and Carol Lynn Acord; three grandsons: Joshua Robert Buss, Adam James Buss, and Christian Fletcher Buss; two sisters: Joyce Long (Richard), and Janyce Harrison (Kent), and many other family and friends. Preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher, in 1988; and her son, James Fletcher, in 2002; as well as two sisters and two brothers.

The family especially wishes to thank those who gave her such excellent care, including Dr. Brian Tudor and his wonderful staff, and Nancy and the staff at Vista Care Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family, at Flora Lees request, suggests donations to the Perpetual Education Fund.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 11 a.m., in the Hillcrest 6th Ward Building, 1035 South 800 East, Orem. Friends may call on the family, from 9:30-10:45 in the morning, prior to the funeral; or, Tuesday evening, from 6-8 p.m., at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
