A consulting economist, Frank W. "Bill" Bennett Jr., 73, passed away in New Orleans on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. A native of Baton Rouge, Bill was a 1956 graduate of LSU, where he was an active member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and president of the student body of the engineering school during his senior year. After working as a civil engineer at Crown Zellerbach paper company in Bogalusa, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force stationed at a radar site north of Goose Bay, Labrador. In 1963, he received a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, then continued further studies at the University of Chicago under Nobel Laureate George Stigler. In 1967, he joined the faculty of the Tulane Business School as associate dean. After leaving Tulane in 1977, Bill was president of Pan American Furniture Co. (later Expressions) and then spent several decades as a consulting economist. He retired in 2000, spending his summers on the coast of Maine, and the rest of the year in New Orleans, almost never missing Friday lunch at Galatoire's, eventually "graduating" to his favorite corner table. He is survived by a brother, Barton Bennett, of Baton Rouge; sons, John Frank Bennett, of New Orleans, Daniel Edgerton Bennett, of Lordsburg, N.M., and Mark Bradford Bennett, of Los Angeles; daughter, Sylvia Karina Fontana, of Kenner; and companion and fiancée, Beverly Splane, of New Orleans. Memorial service at the Myra Clare Rogers Chapel (Newcomb College campus), 1229 Broadway Ave., at Oak Street, New Orleans, on Tuesday, May 6, at 1 p.m.
