John Drury's original name was Seth Booth Drury, and he was the oldest of seven children of Robert Drury and Hannah Booth. He was born in Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire England and worked as a boot maker before he immigrated to the United States in 1885. At that time, he changed his name to John Seth Drury. (According to his naturalization papers, he may also have used his brother's name, Charles Drury, for a short time for unknown reasons.)John was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. John worked at the roller mill in De Smet and received severe injuries when he was mangled in the gearing in May 1892.

While living in De Smet, he met and married Estella (Stella) Gilbert on April 26, 1888, and they had one son, Fred Seth Drury, who was born in De Smet on Dec. 3, 1893. Although John's headstone states his year of death as 1891, he died of typhoid fever on November 17 1895.
