OBITUARY: (no paper name)
Mrs. Sarah C. Crowell, widow of the late Capt. Henry Crowell, died in Russell county, Ala., at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. John G. Abercumbie, May 16, 1877.
She was confined to her bed about two weeks, suffering much pain, and unconscious for two days before her death. - She calmly died without a struggle. After a few days illness, she appeared conscious that death was near, and she gave directions about her burial, saying she wished only the burial service of her Church with a few remarks by the preacher at the grave, which was done by the Rev. Dr. J. S. Key, of Columbus, Ga. She was buried at Fort Mitchell, Ala., by the side of her husband, who died in 1840. She was born near Camden, S.C., April 10th, 1792. Mrs. Crowell's maiden name was Cantey. She was sister to my mother and to the late Maj. John and Gen. James W. Cantey, of Camden, S.C. She moved to Washington county, Ga. with her father, Maj. James Cantey, whilst a gir, and when about 17 years of age was united in marriage to Capt. Crowell. Soon after their marriage they moved to the old Agency, on Flint river, Georgia, where his brother, Col. John Crowell, was Indian Agent - living there some 15 or 20 years. They moved to Ft. Mitchell, Ala. soon after the Indian was of 1836, in which neighborhood whe lived until her death. She laves two sons and five daughters, also, many grnd and great-grand children. Two sons and one daughter died previous to her death. The Rev. John Crowell, of Alabama, is her oldest son. She has now gone up to meet her Saviour, whom she worshiped for many years. She was a consistent member of the Methodist Church for more than fifty years - many of our oldest ministers can testify that her piety and zeal were not confined to herself alone, but earnestly exerted in behalf of others. She might justly be called one of the "Pioneer Christians" on Flint river, for she was among its first religious settlers, and her house was always the preacher's home. She was a true woman, of gentle and generous impulses, of warm and loving heart, her ambition was to make and be made happy, to carry sunshine to every heart and home. She lost all of her property by the result of the war, but amidst it all, religion never failed her. My aunt has long been the centre of attraction to her numerous relatives and friends. Furnished with remarkable conversational powers and a very retentive memory - she would often treat us with recitals of incidents from her eventful life in her earlier days. While her acquaintances in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, will regret her death, they will rejoice to know that her end was peace.
