On December 15, 1829, John married Martha ( MARTIN ) CALDWELL.
Their childre were Sarah, Isabel, James, Charles, Martin Van B., Jane, Catharine, Andrew J., John, Knox D. and Elizabeth (twins), David T. and Fremont.
He was in the military in both the Civil War and the Mexican war. Capt. John Caldwell led a body of Volunteers known as the "Sandusky Rangers" marching from Upper Sandusky, OH to Camp Washington, near Cincinati, OH. Major Caldwell later was appointed Commissary of an Ohio Regiment of Volunteers and proceeded to Mexico in 1846. John Caldwell was very politically minded as he was Crawford County, OH Auditor for 3 1/2 terms, land agent for 6 years, Crawford County Sheriff for 2 years, Wyandot County Township Trustee in 1846. - Helen Bernice ( WYETH ) BRIGHT HAMPSON
John employed as mail carrier over the mountains, where it is supposed he was killed.
His stone is a memorial.
