Bailey was a veteran of the War of 1812, and served as a Sergeant in Capt. William Woods' Light Infantry Regiment (also known as "Yancey's Regiment") of the Virginia Militia.
Bailey enlisted on July 27, 1814, and was later discharged on Dec 10, 1814, at Camp Holly Springs, Virginia. Some years later, he applied for, and was granted, 80 acres of bounty land.
His first wife was Malinda Wheeler Bailey. She was born circa 1799 in Rowan Co., North Carolina, and died circa 1838 at Gibson Station, Lee Co., Virginia.
He married his second wife, Elizabeth Hudson on April 18, 1841, at Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee. She later applied for her widow's pension. Her claim was #26,729, and her certificate #14,467. She was awarded a widow's pension od $8 a month which was later raised to #12. She is reported to have died Jan 12, 1889, near the settlement of Lazette in Cowley Co., Kansas.
