HATTERAS - M/Sgt. Retired Luther Lathan Austin, Jr., 57, died June 27 in Norfolk General Hospital following a long illness.
A native of Hatteras, he was the son of Mrs. Ellen Peele Austin of Hatteras and the late Luther Lathan Austin, Sr.
He was retired from the US Air Force after 26 years and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was also retired from the NC Dept. of Transportation Ferry Division as a mechanical engineer. He was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, Cape Hatteras Masonic Lodge #698, Buxton Moose Lodge, and the Sudan Shrine Temple.
Surviving are his mother; one daughter, Mrs. Monica Austin John of Orlando, Florida; two sons: L. Craig Austin and Glenn Scott Austin of Orlando, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Midgett of Hatteras; and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday in the Hatteras United Methodist Church by Bishop Thomas L. Ainscough with burial following in the Oden Family Cemetery in Hatteras with Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, in charge of arrangements.
