While at a meeting, Officer Ray Appleby suffered a heart attack. He was hospitalized at the Cook Community Hospital, but died a week later at age 49.

Officer Appleby was stationed in Orr, Minnesota. He was born on February 13th, 1913. He was survived by his wife, Olive, and six children. Olive had to hire an attorney to get worker's compensation benefits for her husband's death. She contended that her husband's death was a direct result of his work. She eventually won her case. His funeral was held on January 16th at the Orr High School gymnasium and he was buried in the Leiding Cemetery.
