Married Elizabeth Johnson, January 26, 1831, in Dearborn Co., Indiana.
Lived near town of Hartford, Union Township, Ohio County, Indiana for most of his life. John's father, John Trader, Sr., left his two baby sons, John and Arthur, in the care of William Wamsley (aka Walmsley, Warmsley) and his wife, Nancy (nee Bussell), in Boone County, Kentucky. John was indentured, as a baby, to Isaac Carlton in Boone County, Kentucky. John's brother, Arthur Trader, was indentured to James Porter. (Do not know what became of Arthur.) Isaac Carlton bought land in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1814, and moved there. John is in Dearborn County in 1840 census. In 1850 and 1860 census of Ohio County (formed from Dearborn County). One census lists Kentucky as his birthplace, the other lists Ohio as birthplace. Later, some children list father's birthplace as KY, others as OH.
