Hattie E. Ashley

Miss Hattie E. Ashley, formerly of this city, died last Monday morning at the home of her brother, Ed Ashley, of Chicago. Her death as the result of a surgical operation performed the week previous.

The operation was to remove a bony obstruction in one of the nasal passages, which had been present since her birth, and no serious results had been anticipated by the relatives.

Funeral services were held in Chicago on Wednesday, and the body was brought to Sibley for burial.

Harriett Elizabeth Ashley was born in this county to Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Ashley, on the old home farm seven miles northwest of this city, on August 29, 1869. From early childhood it was evident that she had a bright mind and unusual intellectual capacity.

She graduated from the High School here in 1887, from the Chicago Normal school in 1895, from the University of Illinois in 1900, and later spent two years in study in Europe.

She had taught school in this vicinity, at Dubuque, Iowa, and the past year was head of the department of French in the city High School of Butte, Montana.

She had a character of unusual uprightness and honor, and a fine spirit, which won for her warm friends wherever she went.

A month ago she came from Butte to Chicago to assist in the care of her aged father, at the home of her brother, and while there decided upon the operation, which her physicians had assured her would be necessary to her health.
