Attorney John Loren Kennedy, the second of two sons, was born to the late Dr. Melvin D. Kennedy, Sr. and Lyda McCree Kennedy on July 27, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. At an early age, the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. As a young boy, his world was the campuses of Morehouse College and Atlanta University, where his father was Chairman of the Departments of History and Political Science and where his mother served as Head Dietitian. Kennedy received his education in the Atlanta Public School System and graduated from Lenox School (a Preparatory Academy), Lenox, Massachusetts. He received a B.A. degree in Business Administration from Morehouse College in 1964 and taught there part-time from 1970 through 1975. In Dec. of 1964 he married Brenda Lyons of St. Louis, Missouri. To this union was born a lovely daughter, Carol. After graduation, Kennedy worked for two years as a Systems Engineer for the IBM Corporation and left in 1966 to pursue a law degree at Harvard Law School where he graduated in 1969. After law school, Kennedy returned to Atlanta where he became one of the first two African-American attorneys hired by the major law firm of Alston, Miller and Gaines, now known as Alston and Bird. He left the law firm in 1971 to establish his own law firm, now known as Thomas, Kennedy, Sampson and Patterson, which is the oldest African-American-owned law firm in Georgia and the largest all African-American law firm in the United States. Kennedy was also very active in the Atlanta Community serving on many boards and committees including: the Board of Directors of Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association of Atlanta; Georgia Board of Public Safety; Community Relations Commission for the City of Atlanta (Chairman, Crisis Task Force, Vice-Chairman of Commission); Affirmative Action Committee of The Democratic Party of Georgia; State and Local Affairs Task Force of Atlanta Chamber of Commerce; Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia; Member of the Educational Advisory Committee of the Georgia Real Estate Commission; the Empire Real Estate Board; former president of the Gate City Bar Association; member and former president of the Atlanta Chapter of The Guardsmen, Inc. He was also a member of Atlanta's Friendship Baptist Church. In 1991, Kennedy received the Achievement in Law Award from the Atlanta Chapter of the Morehouse College National Alumni Association. John L. Kennedy died suddenly in Atlanta in April 1994. His funeral was held at the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College. In addition to being survived by his loving wife and daughter, Kennedy is survived by a brother (also a attorney), a host of relatives and friends and his beloved partners and staff of Thomas, Kennedy, Sampson and Patterson.
