Religious figure. 39th Bishop of The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Elected a Bishop in Birmingham, AL in 1978, He was installed as Senior Bishop of the denomination at the 1994 General Conference held in Memphis, TN. Equally dear to his heart as his dedication to kingdom building was his commitment to the civil rights movement. He led the effort to integrate public schools and organized sit-ins as president of the local NAACP chapter in Knoxville, TN. As a Bishop, he presided over the Seventh Episcopal District (1978-82) the Ninth Episcopal District (1982-1986), the Tenth Episcopal district (1986-1994), and the Second Episcopal District (1994-2002).
