Thomas Cleary was a United States Volunteer during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.

He was born in Ireland, and emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City, New York.

He enlisted on July 20th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service, at the age of 19, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company D of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 29th, 1863, He was transferred with his company to Company H of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 14th, 1863. He served with the regiment during its campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. He was promoted to Corporal on July 1st, 1865, and was mustered out of service with the Company on July 13th, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.

At the time of his enlistment in 1863 he was described as having blue eyes, light hair, a light complexion, was 5 ft., 6 in. tall, and was employed as a baker.

He died on March 18th, 1915, at Bath, New York, and was buried at the National Cemetery in Bath, Steuben County, New York.
