Birth: unknown
Death: Jul. 26, 1863

Civil War Union Soldier. Charles F. Beaman, a native son of Roxbury, Massachusetts, was recruited to serve as a volunteer soldier on September 3, 1861. The eighteen year old subsequently mustered in as a Private into Company A, 7th New Hampshire Infantry on October 29, 1861. These New Englanders were eventually transferred south where they became active participants in the campaign to take Charleston, South Carolina. On July 18, 1863, Colonel Haldimand Sumner Putnam, the commanding officer of the 7th NH, led the blue combatants of his own regiment plus the 100th New York, 62nd Ohio and the 67th Ohio down the sea front of Morris Island, an islet near Charleston. They were a supporting force to the leading troops commanded by George Crockett Strong. The Union's objective was a Confederate stronghold named Battery Wagner. After a time lying in the sand, Colonel Putnam ordered his men up and led them in a futile charge against Battery Wagner. The Confederate artillerymen, as they did to Strong's command, began an effective and deadly cannonade. A Union survivor recalled that "the grape and canister from the [Confederate] guns dealt death and destruction" to his fellow comrades. Private Beaman, the subject of this memorial, was among the numerous who fell. The wounds to his right arm proved mortal, and after surviving for eight days, the devoted soldier died on July 26, 1863 in Beaufort, South Carolina.
