George M. Hoover established the first business in Dodge City, Kansas. The commander of Fort Dodge, being weary of his patrol always being drunk, ordered all saloons to vacate the fort. This included a five-mile radius of government property around the fort. Tying a rag on the spoke of his wagon wheel, Hoover and his partner John McDonald measured off five miles West on the Santa Fe trail, dropped their wagon gate, built a bar of sod supports topped with a plank, and opened for business on 8AM June 17, 1872, serving whiskey for 25 cents ($20.00 current value) a ladle full.
