Jan Bolt was born in June 1878 in the country village of Uithuizermeeden, in the northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, the first son of the 27 years old farmer Reinder Bolt and Jantje Lameris, named for his maternal grandfather Jan Frans Lameris.

* Martje, b. 10 Feb 1877, d. 14 Feb 1959, 't Zandt, Groningen;
* Berend, 7 December 1879, d. 19 April 1954 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA;
* Fenna, b. 13 Apr 1881, d. 11 Feb 1978 in Opperdoes, Noord-Holland.
His father Reinder Bolt was in the period 1877-1879 a farmer and in 1881 a land user (landgebruiker).
His father, farmer Reinder Bolt died in July 1883 at the age of 32 years, when Jan was 5 years old.
In May 1885 his mother Jantje Lameris remarried in Uithuizermeeden to Johannes Dijkema. They divorced in September 1891. His mother Jantje Lameris died in October 1904 at the age of 52 years in her birthplace Uithuizermeeden.
The single Jan Bolt died in 1962 at the age of 83 years in the city of Groningen, capital of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.
