Bertha M. Johnson, 84, Cambridge, died at 2:48 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. She was born June 4, 1918, in Galesburg, the daughter of Chester and Nellie Palmer McKinley. She married Kenneth S. Johnson on Nov. 28,1942, in Kahoka, Mo. He died Nov. 28, 1971. Surviving are a son, Larry (Maxine) McKinley, Cambridge; a daughter, Shirley (Steve) Peterson, Moline; seven grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother. She was educated in rural schools in the Abingdon and Galesburg area. She attended Abingdon High School. She lived in the Cambridge area since her marriage.
She worked at the soda fountain of the former Swan's Drug Store in Cambridge for 16 1/2 years until 1962. She and her husband then operated the Prospect Cafe for three years. She was a member of Cambridge United Methodist Church and helped with the senior citizen's meals program. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, with the Rev. John Vidakovich officiating. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Ambulance Service or Hillcrest Home.(Thank you Jim)
