Obituary

Eugene S. Dowen Sr., son of Joseph Henry and Effie Bennett Dowen, was born on March 22, 1936 in Saratoga Springs, NY. He died June 26, 2010 in Vancouver, WA. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 10:00 am at Chapel of Macy and Son. Interment will be in McBride Cemetery. Viewing will be Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Chapel of Macy and Son.

He was raised and schooled in Saratoga Springs and left school to work at a very young age. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 where he met and married Rose Marie Scheel on September 9, 1956. With a young family, he often worked 2 jobs to provide for them. The family was always first with him. He worked very hard so that family never wanted for anything.

He lived most of his life in the Portland area and worked several jobs including gas station attendant, truck driver, and warehouse manager. However, he was most noted for being a small business owner of a construction company that did commercial and residential remodeling. His hobbies included bowling and golfing.

Eugene earned a patch for having a 200 average in bowling; he was very competitive. He also bowled in a mixed doubles league with his wife that was more play than contest; he loved that also.

He golfed whenever the weather allowed, and sometimes when it did not. Even after he could no longer golf, he loved watching golf on TV. He kept a putter around for the rest of his life. At one point he and his wife owned a 22 foot cabin cruiser. They really loved the boat and were on it every weekend when the weather allowed.

Eugene is survived by his son, 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter in 2001.

EUGENE STEWART DOWEN departed this life on June 26, 2010 at 7:35 am at the age of 74 years 3 months and 4 days. To leave online condolences, please visit the funeral home's website.
