Retired Navy employee
R. P. Johnson, who retired as both a sailor and a civilian employee of the Navy, died Thursday of cancer at Williamsburg (Va.) Community Hospital. He was 62.
Mr. Johnson, who had lived in Williamsburg for 25 years, retired in 1987 after 10 years as a supervisor at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Va.
Born in Roaring Fork, Va., he joined the Navy in 1956 and retired in 1976 with the rank of master chief gunner's mate. He then became a civilian employee of the naval station.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Khedive Temple.
A memorial service for Mr. Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, the former Janis Bierman; a daughter, Jamie Lynn Carpenter of Gloucester, Va.; four sisters, Ellen Windsor of Easton, Pa., Irene Turpin of Riverside, N.J., Inez McGrath of Cambridge and Ann Zuluaf of Essex; a brother, Jimmie Johnson of Street; and a grandson.
The family suggested memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
