He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Roger attended and graduated from Hinton Community High School with the Class of 1964. He continued his education at Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, graduating in 1966.

Roger and Donna Vondrak were united in marriage July 20, 1968, at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Amy.

In 1966, Roger began his 42-year career with power cooperatives by going to work with the Plymouth County Rural Electric Cooperative in Le Mars. In 1974, Roger accepted a position in Jefferson with Greene County REC, which later became the Midland Power Cooperative. He retired as manager of the cooperative Jan. 1, 2008. While living in Jefferson, Roger and Donna were members of the First United Methodist Church where he had served in several offices throughout the years. He was also a member of the Jefferson Rotary Club and Lions Club for many years.

Roger was an avid golfer and member of the Lakeside Golf Course in Jefferson. Through his position with the power cooperative, Roger was affiliated with several associations on the local, state and national levels.
