James Arnold and Olivia JOHNSON Bass, were geographical victims of Sherman's march through their home state of Georgia. Paul L. Bass recalled later that at one time he had just one garment "a kind of night gown affair made out of a flour sack." Ann Olivia told of having trunks of confederate money that had become worthless. She said the last time she was able to spend any of it, she paid $15.00 for five yards of calico. Calico usually sold for 5 cents a yard. However, pictures of their home in Georgia, shows a large, attractive two-story home with porches on both floors, decorated with rather ornate banisters.
