James Sanford Ammons was born March 18, 1870 in West Virginia. He came west to Iowa with his parents at the age of nine, making part of the trip in a covered wagon.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Hattie Byxbe at Promise City, Iowa on July 21, 1901.

He moved to Wyoming in 1909 and worked for the Chicago Northwestern railway until his retirement in the 1930s.

Since his retirement. Mr. Ammons had made his home near his children. He had been in Douglas at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph Skelton, four months at the time of his death.

Survivors included two sons, Wendell of Douglas, Wyoming and LeRoy of Denver, Colorado; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Skelton and Mrs. Lillian Foster of Douglas; Mrs. Alice Durham and Mrs. Wilda Toleman of Greybull, Wyoming and Mrs. Gertrude Smith of Laramie, Wyoming. Two children preceded him in death.
