Born in Sedgewick, Alberta CA to Friedrich August Wilhelm (Fred) Schumann (1872-1950) and Ida A. Schleicher (1884-1917), Walter was one of five siblings. His father was an immigrant from Freienwalde, Pomerania (who had arrived at age 12) and his mother was an immigrant from Germany (who arrived at age 4). They had married in St. Croix, Hudson, WI in 1902 before emigrating to Canada about 1905. His father remarried twice after his mother's untimely death when Walter was a teenager.

Walter was a carpenter and builder. He died accidentally when, suffering an epileptic seizure while on the job, he fell into an excavation and suffocated. He never married.
