John Knox Morgan was born to Samuel Morgan, Jr. and Eleanor Garrison Morgan. Samuel's father, Samuel Morgan, Sr.(1750-1833)migrated to Georgia from Pennsyvania and New Jersey, just after the Revolutionary War, in which he served.

John Knox moved his family to Benton County,Alabama, along with his father, Samuel Morgan, Jr.. They settled northwest of the present site of Piedmont, Al. on Feb. 25, 1851, and were granted 40 acres of land.

John and Margaret then migrated to Texas in the early 1850's, before the Civil War. They traveled to Texas with their children, along with some other migrating families, among them the Phillips, Todd,Elder,White,Cheatum,King,and Edwards families. They were among the first settlers of West Mountain, Upshur County, Tx.
