Daughter of Lawrence Hartman and Zilpha Smith, Alvena (also spelled Alvina) married James Powley Benjamin 10 Mar 1866 in Ernestown, Ontario, Canada. They were living in Churchill Township, Ogemaw County, Michigan, by 1880.

Alvena was the mother of 8 children, 6 of whom lived to adulthood: Elgie Nora (Rowden), Lawrence Almon, Henry Esbert, James Elijah, William Wilson and Archie.

The inscription on Alvena's headstone erroneously states that she died in 1891. Her death certificate gives her death correctly as Sept. 10, 1900, as she was also enumerated in the 1900 census.
