Son of Capt. John Barnard, a sea captain, and his wife Margaret Longan Barnard of Camden, New Jersey.

He and his sister Catherine died of diptheria less than a week apart. His father died at sea of yellow fever in 1853 when Frank was only 8 years old. Two years after his own death, he lost 2 brothers in the Civil War - William C Barnard, a West Point Cadet, Aide de Camp of General Phil Kearney, died at the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia at the age of 19. George Washington Barnard died in Goldsboro, North Carolina following amputation of his leg, age 30, leaving his widow with 2 small children. His eldest brother (my great grandfather) died at sea in 1859 when Frank was just 13.
