Berneil M. Drake, of Phoenix, Arizona, died April 8, 2015 at the Beatitude’s Care Center. She was preceded in death by husband, James E. Drake, Jr. of 56 years. Berneil will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law, Jerayl White of Tucson, and her Iowa relatives, Rollie and Connie Gustafson, Gwen and Merlin Anderson, and Ron and Jo Gustafson. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, April 20, 2015 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Maryland, Phoenix, AZ 85015, with a luncheon to follow at Burns Hall. A private interment will be held for the family. Born November 20, 1921 in Sioux City, Iowa to Ruth Wilson and Gust Lindberg, her childhood was spent in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon receiving her teaching degree from Drake University in Iowa, she enjoyed many years of teaching and counseling students in the Phoenix Union High School District. She earned a Master’s Degree in 1947 from the Sate University of Iowa. Berneil was an active member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Phoenix where she enjoyed sharing her musical talents. She was a member of the Phoenix, Symphony playing her flute and also enjoyed the organ and piano. As a member of the Two B’s she and her friend, Betsy Cary entertained many, especially those in senior living facilities. As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, she received the highest honor of distinction by being awarded the International Achievement Award. Berneil served as Editor of the DKG Sahuaro newspaper for 30 years and a charter member of Delta Kappa since 1967. Organizing the Omicron State’s unique Latin America Fund Committee was also her accomplishment. She was treasurer and a two-term President of All Arizona School Retirees. At the Beatitudes Campus, she worked to register voters and served on a scholarship committee for Washington High School. Her influence on young students’ lives was remarkable. She was a member of the Organist Guild. She will be remembered for her fun-loving attitude, her eagerness to have a good time which included her remarkable scores of Wii bowling at the Beatitudes Campus.
