Thomas Doyle, one of the oldest residents of this village, died shortly after midnight Tuesday, January 28, at his home on White Street. Mr. Doyle who was in his 88th year had been ill for four months.
Mr. Doyle was born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland, on December 21, 1848, a son of Patrick and Katharine Bennett Doyle. When a young man, Mr. Doyle came to this country and practically his entire life was spent at Sangerfield and Waterville. In his early life he was a cabinet maker but when employment decreased in this line with the advent of furniture factories he followed the occupation of builder and carpenter until his retirement ten years ago.
He was twice married, his first wife being Margaret Russell. Her death occurred 54 years ago. To them two children were born: a son, William P. who now resides in Rome, and a daughter, Anna, now Mrs. William F. Donahue of Utica. Seven years later he married Katherine Banville who died three years ago. Three sons were born to them, all of whom survive. They are Thomas A. and James of this village, and John J. of Owego. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Doyle was a member of St. Bernard's Church and of the Holy Name Society. The funeral was held this morning from his late home and at St. Bernard's Church at 9:30 o'clock where a high mass of requiem was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. John L. Powers. The body was placed in the vault at St. Bernard's Cemetery.
