Born in Germany and studied Latin, Greek and French. Immigrated to United States in 1879, settled in Wathena, Kansas because he had an uncle who lived there. On January 1, 1880, he was hired by Dr. W. W. Carter to work in his drug store. He was made a partner of the business in 1884 and bought Dr. Carter's interest in 1892.

He married Emma Fiegenbaum on September 15, 1886. He was survived by his wife, 5 children, 6 grandchildren, 3 sisters, and one brother who resided in Germany.
