Rose J. Bivens, 82, of Battle Creek died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at the Battle Creek Health System. Rose was born June 26, 1927 in Battle Creek the daughter of Kenneth and Carma (Dicken) Arnold.
She graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1945 and attended Kellogg Community College. Rose was employed at Pennfield Middle School as a secretary for 26 years where she retired in July of 1986. She had also been employed at Michigan Bell Telephone Company and Bivens' Pharmacy. Rose was active in Purdy PTA and the former Pennfield Citizens Advisory Committee, she helped form the Pennfield School Retirees group and their Memorial Scholarship Committee, also a member of the Pennfield District Advisory Committee.
She was member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, its Women's Fellowship and the Susanna Winslow-Ruth Vore Circle-serving 3 terms as its president, and board member of the Church Council and assistant church treasurer. She served on many committees, taught Church School and was principal of the Nursery Department. For over 30 years, she was the Sunday morning greeter. She was past president of the Women's Fellowship, the Battle Creek Town Hall and held offices at the SW Assn. and state level for the UCC Women of Michigan. She was elected president of the UCC women in 2008, was Honored as Lay Women of the year for the state in 2007.
Red Cross volunteer since 1986, working at the former Community Hospital and presently at the BCHS where she served as Chairman of Volunteers for 3 years in the mid 1980s and presently serving as interim Chairman. Rose was secretary-treasurer and newsletter editor of the Superior People Chapter of the Family Motor Home Association, first president of the BC Central Alumni Association, chairman for all the reunions of the class of 1945, a member of the BC Central Hall of Fame Committee and their Centennial Committee, she was elected into their Hall of Fame for the 2008-09 group of inductees, active volunteer and Ambassador for the BC Community Foundation, she was chosen 2003 Citizen of the Year by the Calhoun Area School Board Members Association and she enjoyed golfing and was honored as a 25 year bowler. She really enjoyed volunteering, reading, photography and watching her grandchildren playing sports.
Rose is survived by sons, Steven (Kris) Bivens of Battle Creek and James (Karla) Bivens of Marshall; grandchildren, Don (Katie) Bivens of Battle Creek, Lori Bivens of Duncan, SC, Michelle (Jeff) Oleniczak of Grand Rapids, Melissa Bivens of Battle Creek; four great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Sherman of Battle Creek; nieces Marta (Mark) Kwiatkowski of Augusta, Jennifer (Jess) Hill of Birmingham, AL, Kristen (Steven) Ford of Orlando, FL; nephew, Kent (Sally) Coffman of Battle Creek; great-nephews Lee (Cathy) Kwiatkowski of San Francisco and Martin Coffman III of Battle Creek. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Bivens in 2005.
At the request of the family, friends may call at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Monday, where they will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Thomas Ott officiating. Interment will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
