This started his military career which was not ended until his retirement in August of 1940. During his period of service he spent many years on board various battleships but in later years he was assigned to land duty at various points, a part of the time in charge of naval hospitals in Pensacola, San Diego, and Mare Island. He was honored by selection as a member of the American College of Surgeons because of his commendable contribution to the profession in which his mature life had been spent.
