Elijah was the son of George Gerkey and Rachel Martin. He was born in Pennsylvania and migrated to Ohio with his parents between 1835 and 1838. Elijah married Evaria Faler in 1855 in Ohio. By 1860, he is living with his parents and continued to do so until after his mother's death in 1870. He then moved around from Michigan to Oklahoma to Kansas. It is unknown what happened to Eva. There is a Catherine Elizabeth Gerkey who married Chauncy Fair in Ohio. Elijah signed her marriage certificate. He apparently was her uncle.Elijah had several brothers and sisters. His headstone states that he was born in 1820. This is incorrect. The cemetery placed a marker for Elijah guessing his age from an obituary that was published upon his death. Elijah married second Elizabeth Six, widow of Wilson Six. Most of Elizabeth's children lived with them off and on until after Elizabeth's death between 1915 and 1920.

Elijah's birth information is from the family bible of Lucinda Gerkey Stull, Elijah's sister. The Bible has been handed down through that family and copies have been made of the entries of the childrens' birth. the information is in the hands of Patrick Lawrence, descendent of Lucinda's.
