"SAFFORD ARIZ. AN ARIZONA PIONEER ANSWERS LOST CALL. - (Special Correspondence.)
Safford, Ariz., March 5. - Nelson P. Beebe, aged 80 years, died at his home Feb. 21. He had been ill only a few days and was not considered to be seriously sick, although confined to his bed. The end came gently and he passed away like a tired child dropping off in sleep.
Mr. Beebe was born in Waterford, New London, Conn., Dec. 30, 1831. At the age of 15 he left home and became a sailor, which calling he followed for several years, finally locating at San Bernardino, Cal., where he engaged in the freighting business between that city and Salt Lake City, Utah. He remained in this business for about ten years, later making his home in Provo, Utah.
At the age of 24 years he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He went on a mission to the southern states in 1876, returning in 1877, when he led a company of Saints from the state of Arkansas to Arizona. Mr. Beebe returned to Provo, Utah, where he lived for several years. Afterwards selling his home he returned to Arizona in 1879 and settled at Shumway, on the headwaters of the Little Colorado river, where he erected the first grist mill. Later he removed to St. David, where he lived until the death of his wife, when he moved his family to Safford, where he had lived until his death.
He is survived by six children, all married, 33 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Feb. 22, and was largely attended. Bishop J.R. Walker officiated. Interment was in Union cemetery. He wrote poems in his later years, one of which, addressed to his wife and children, and containing his wishes as to burial and funeral arrangements, also bearing a strong testimony to the truth of the gospel, was read at the funeral."
