Jesse was born in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Catherine Fitz (Randolph) Baum. His mother died when he was young. His father remarried and the family removed to Stark County, Ohio in 1814.

Jesse married Sarah Linn on May 7, 1829 in Stark County, Ohio. He and his bride thereupon removed to St. Joseph County, Michigan by 1830 probably with his father and some of his siblings. Jesse purchased land in 1830 and he and Sarah had several children.

The family went unto Washington Township, Porter County, Indiana about 1845 where Jesse farmed and the couple had more children. Jesse was living next to the farm of his brother James, who was an early settler of Porter County arriving about 1835.

Jesse and family were in neighboring Morgan Township by 1860 where he continued to farm. He died before 1870.

Children from the union include: Enoch, Anna, Harriet, Mary Ann, Harmon, Viola, Ida and Alice.
