WILLIAM BARNES SR. FOUNDED SALES, MARKETING FIRM
St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - Saturday, June 2, 2001

William A. Barnes Sr., chief executive officer and founder of Spectrulite Consortium Inc. in Madison, died Wednesday (May 30, 2001) of cancer at the Westchester House in Chesterfield. He was 72 and lived in Chesterfield.

A native of Galesburg, Ill., Mr. Barnes attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He and Phyllis Sanders Barnes of Chesterfield, his high school sweetheart, were married in 1950.

In 1951, Mr. Barnes went to work in tech sales and marketing for Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich. He later worked at the company's offices in Newark, N.J., New York City and Boston before he was transferred back to Midland.

After almost 30 years, Mr. Barnes left to found his own sales and marketing company, Spectrulite Corp., in Midland.

In 1986, Mr. Barnes moved the company, which became Spectrulite Consortium Inc., to Madison, where he bought an aluminum and magnesium-producing factory.

Mr. Barnes, who served as chief executive officer, chairman and owner, expanded the company and later built another plant, in Findlay, Ohio. The company, which now has 430 employees, sells metal products to companies such as Boeing and General Motors.

"He blended serious business objectives with wit and humor," said his son Lee Barnes, a senior vice president at Spectrulite. "He turned something very dry and technical into something humorous so people would remember it, almost like a teacher."

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at the Bellerive Forever Mausoleum Chapel, 740 North Mason Road, Creve Coeur, followed by entombment.

In addition to his wife and son, survivors include two daughters, Carole Morales of Ballwin and Gina DeLorme of Chesterfield; two other sons, Chris Barnes of Chesterfield and William Barnes Jr. of Hazelwood; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4207 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, Mo. 63108.
