Child Killed Playing Outside

Tragedy struck in South Montgomery County Monday afternoon when a young woman accidentally ran over and killed a preschool age neighbor. A little after 4 p.m., 21-year-old (name omitted) was driving her BMW SUV on East Legends Trail, west of Aldine Westfield and north of Rayford Road, as 3-year-old Amy Collier played in the deep ditch about 60 feet north of her family's driveway on Legends Estate Drive.
As the driver turned left on Legends Estate Drive, headed for her family's home, little Amy climbed up the steep incline and out of the ditch onto the roadway. At only about three feet tall, and leaning forward, Amy was near the ground and Royse did not see her.
The driver heard a thud, but did not realize what happened until she nearly reached her own driveway, three doors down from Amy's, and looked in the rearview mirror. To her horror, the driver saw the small child wearing a red jacket and laying in the roadway.
She called 911 and medics responded to the scene. A Life Flight medical helicopter was requested and then cancelled. Amy Collier was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Woodlands where all efforts to save the child failed. Amy was beyond help and pronounced dead less than an hour after she was playing in the ditch near her home.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident and a representative of the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office Vehicular Crimes Division was on-scene as of 8:15 p.m.
No charges have been filed against the driver at this time and investigators say none are expected.
The Collier Family is held up and sustained by their deep faith in God. They have met with the young girl who accidently hit Aimee and have prayed with her family. I am touched by their caring nature and the fact they reached out to the young girl. My heart goes out to both families.
