Union Civil War Officer. He was an Irish immigrant from Marahfelt when he arrived in the United States and eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. He enlisted with the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry when the Civil War began in 1861 and was assigned to the rank of 1st Sergeant. Armstrong eventually rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. When regiment commander, Colonel John H. Patrick was killed at the Battle of New Hope Church, Armstrong was promoted from Major and became the second-in-command to Colonel Robert L. Kilpatrick. He became the commanding officer early in 1865 when Kilpatrick was transferred out of the regiment. He returned to Ohio after the war where he died in Cincinnati.
