Candacie Brown, daughter of Jacob Overpeck was born in Parke County, Oct. 15, 1860, departed this life Aug. 15, 1934, age 73 years, 10 months. She had one brother, Elias Overpeck and three sisters, Jane Alkire, Elizabeth Nevins and Margaret Alkire, all deceased. Having lost her parents when small she was reared by Isaac Overpeck. She received her education in the common schools.
She was united in marriage to George W. Brown, Sept. 22, 1878. One child, Orena, who is with us today, came to bless this union. She is now Orena Sweeney, wife of J. E. Sweeney of Waverly, Kansas. Orena has one child, Maxine. For a number of years, they lived on a farm near where Sam Holbert now lives. They lived in Catlin eight years and went to Chicago in 1895. She has been an invalid a number of years.
In her young girlhood, she found the Savior of her soul and united with the Mt. Olivet M. E. church of Catlin of which she was an active member and sang in the choir for 15 years.
She is survived by the husband, the daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law, J. E. Sweeney, one niece, who lives in Florida, several nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Olivet church by Rev. Clyde Lininger at 2 o'clock, Friday, Aug. 17. A quartet sang three songs. Pall bearers were Elias Overpeck, Oscar Overpeck, Dan Pence, Leonidas Overpeck, Perry Neet and Isaac Overpeck. Burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
