SANDY LEVEL - Rev. Gene Richard Ashworth, 70, of 10845 W. Gretna Road, Sandy Level, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at his residence.
Born June 12, 1937, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Hart R. Ashworth and Lelia Younger Ashworth Dalton. Rev. Ashworth was a graduate of Fruitland Bible Baptist Institute in Hendersonville, N.C., and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was the minister of Sandy Level Baptist Church and the Bill Bolling Memorial Chapel, on Smith Mountain Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Cook Ashworth of the residence; two sons, Don Ashworth and wife, Lolita, of Gretna and Brian Ashworth of Sandy Level; one brother, Charlie Ashworth and wife, Alice, of Gretna; two grandchildren, Jonathan Ashworth and Brionna Ashworth.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Sandy Level Baptist Church by Brian Ashworth, the Rev. Bert Johnson and the Rev. George Huffman Jr.
Burial with military honors by VFW Post #4165 and DAV Chapter 46 will follow in Liberty Memorial Cemetery.
Rev. Ashworth will be taken to Sandy Level Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007. The family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, and other times will be at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Sandy Level Baptist Church, 10845 W. Gretna Road, Sandy Level, VA 24161. Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.
