A native of New York, Frank Batchelder was the son of George and Lydia Mandeville Batchelder.
Mr. Batchelder was a Union veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Company E, 10th New York Heavy Artillery on September 11, 1862 at Ellicott, New York. He mustered out on February 3, 1863 at Fort Richardson, Virginia.
Following his discharge he relocated to Michigan and again volunteered for service enlisting in Company D of the 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry which was reorganized as the 6th Michigan Heavy Artillery following distinguished service at the Siege of Port Hudson.
He is listed in the 1896 Portland city directory living in Milwaukie. In 1900 he was living at the Old Soldiers Home in Roseburg.
There are numerous variations of the spelling of the surname.
