Clarke County
Mississippi, USA
Death: Feb. 13, 1967

Ludie Elijah Burt was the youngest child of Elijah Keen Burt and Logenia Hastine (Jean)Schrimpshire Burt. Ludie was only 17 months old when his father died. His mother Jean was left with 7 children to raise. The oldest child, Zetta was only 13 years old. All the children went to work in Stonewall Cotton Mill at very early ages. The family would later move to
Laurel in Jones County, MS, where they all worked at Laurel Cotton Mill.
Ludie married Mary Kizzie Taylor Reed in 1934 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS. They divorced in 1937. He married Vera Mae Landrum 23 January 1942 in Laurel, Jones County, MS
Ludie enlisted in the US Army in May 1942 and was stationed at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Forrest County, MS. After being honorably discharged from the Army in order to take employment in essential War industry, Ludie and family moved to Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS
to work at Alden Mills. A daughter Geraldine was born to Ludie and Vera Mae about 1943. Her nickname was "Sweetpea". Ludie and Vera Mae separated, assumed divorced. Vera Mae moved back to her family in Laurel and Ludie lost contact with his daughter.
Ludie had a stroke in 1965 and was totally disabled. However, he could still talk.
Because there were no available rooms in Meridian, he was placed in Sumter Nursing Home in York, Sumter County, Alabama, where he received excellent care for the remainder of his days.
He died from kidney failure on 13 February 1967.
His body was brought back to his beloved Clarke County for burial beside his parents.
