Chico Daily Record, Wednesday, October 4, 1899: "Volney A. Bateman's Death". Volney A. Bateman, one of the old settlers of Butte County, died at the family home, known as the Lott place, six miles southeast of Chico, yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock, the cause of death being a cancer. Deceased was a native of Iowa, aged 54 years. He came to California when but a child, and until his death resided almost continuously in this county. His early life in Butte County was spent near Oroville. The relatives of deceased reside in Butte County, and are a mother, sister, brother, two neices [sic] and a nephew. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, and the interment will be in the Durham cemetery. Rev. Green will officiate at the funeral service."
*Chico Daily Record, Wednesday, October 4, 1899: "Bateman Will Admitted". Special to the Record. Oroville, October 25. -- The will of V.A. Bateman was admitted to probate, and Wm. Taylor, W.W. Durham and B.M. Sulmage [sic; should be Dulmage, Ed.] were appointed appraisers. The estate will not exceed in value the sum of $2,000. Hannah Bateman was appointed executrix."

*Per the 1860 Federal Census, Butte County, California, on microfilm supplied by the National Archives, researched at California State University, Chico, Meriam Library: (pg 92b): Henry Bateman, residing in Ophir Township, census information dated 23rd day of July 1860. He is listed as aged 61 years, a farmer, with real estate value of $2,000, personal estate value of $1,500, born in Pennsylvania. Family: wife Amanda, aged 49, born in Kentucky, children: Jas. B. aged 17, born in Iowa; Volney, aged 14, born in Iowa; Henry, aged 13, born in Iowa; and Hannah, aged 10, born in Iowa.
