Brig. General George M. Fusco
June 28, 1932 - May 17, 2011
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. George M. Fusco (ret)78, of Redstone Hill Bristol, CT, died on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Baystate Hospice, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his devoted wife of fifty years, Elizabeth Ann (Binkowski) Fusco with whom he resided in their hometown of Southington, Connecticut. The youngest of ten children, George is survived by one brother: Joseph (Katherine) Fusco, Plainville.
George proudly served in the U.S. Army for over forty years (1948-1992). He attended the University of Maryland and graduated from the U.S. Army War College. He was a Veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, where he earned several medals and commendations for his dedication and duty. He was a high ranking officer assigned to Pentagon intelligence and retired as a Brigadier General.
The patriotism George evidenced in the Army always remained with him. George served under several Connecticut Governors beginning with the Honorable Thomas J. Meskill who appointed him Assistant Commandant of the Rocky Hill Veterans Home and Hospital. In addition, George held various capacities within the Connecticut and Southington Republican Party, including CT GOP State Central Committee member.
George shared his later years with his companion Cynthia Standish Kopcza of Bristol.
He enjoyed socializing at Army reunions and caring for his dog, Benji.
George is survived by three sons: Angelo M. Fusco, his wife Helene and their son Michael of West Hartford; George M. Fusco, Jr. of Cheshire; Cheryl Bunton-Malin of Palm City FLA,and their daughters Jennifer (Adam) Lane of Lake Worth, FLA and Lisa M. Fusco with daughter Tiana of New Britain;and Frank J. Fusco and his spouse Jacqui, East Hartford. In addition, George leaves behind one daughter, Mary Aleia, her spouse Bryan and their son Brenden of Bristol. George will be remembered by several nieces and nephews.
The Fusco family gratefully acknowledges and extends deep appreciation to the physicians and staff of Baystate Medical Center, VNA and Hospice, as well as Kindred Hospital-Park View, MA, and Hartford Hospital, CT who vigilantly attended to George's health throughout the past year.
There shall be no calling hours. Military honors will be accorded at St. Thomas Cemetery, Meriden Avenue, immediately following a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Thomas Church, 133 Bristol Street, Southington on Thursday May 26th at 10:30 am. Della Vecchia Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Southington,is in charge of the arrangements.
