Social reformer. Wife of educator and civil rights leader Dr. John Hope. She brought about change in her lifetime and planted seeds that bore fruit in the civil rights movement. One of the most effective activists in the South through her activities with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Urban League, and many other organizations, she helped to found, and for twenty-five years led, the Neighborhood Union, the first female social welfare agency for blacks in Atlanta, Georgia, and a model for other communities.
