Mrs Helen C. Uhl Collins, an educator in Southeast Missouri for many years, and a great-great-granddaughter of Don Louis Lorimier, died early today at St. Francis Medical Center She had been ill for some time.
Mrs. Collins was 73 years old and had resided at Chateau Girardeau.
Mrs Collins was a member of the English Department at SEMO State University from 1946 until her retirement in June of 1975. She had remained active in university and community affairs until her recent confinement. She began her teaching career, which spanned 49 years, at Delta High School in 1926 She also taught at Franklin School here. Mrs. Collins graduated from the old Southeast Missouri State Teachers College on May 26, 1926, with a B.S. degree in education and from Northwestern University with a M.A. degree in August of 1938.
Mrs Collins was born Aug. 26, 1906, in Cape Girardeau, the daughter of Arthur Uhl and Maud Lorimier She was the last of the descendants of the founder of Cape Girardeau, Louis Lorimier. Mrs. Collins' father, Arthur Uhl, was with the Cape Girardeau Post Office for many years.
The former Miss Uhl married Dr. E. A. Collins, a noted faculty member at the university in 1949. He died in 1960. Dr. Collins was author of many school textbooks, and wrote much on the history of Missouri and its peoples.
Survivors of Mrs. Collins include a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary Lousie Concialdi, Munster, Ind.; two stepgrandsons, Douglas Concialdi, Fulton, and Paul Concialdi, New Haven, Conn., and a cousin, Albert Uhl, Cape Girardeau.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 Thursday morning at Old St. Vincent's with the Rev. Joseph Gosche, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in New Lorimier Cemetery. Parish prayers will be at 7 Wednesday night at Ford and Sons Funeral Home.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 Wednesday afternoon.
Pallbearers will be Leonard Edmisten, Robert Grayson, Leo Harris, Peter Hilty, Bruce Parrish, and Daniel Straubel.
